Down to Eaglehawk Neck and yet another lovely Isthmus. Found a backpackers cabin in the woods (Bluegum Hostel, Marion and Phil) as a base for a fantastic few days of experimentation and exploration. I want to go back again. This is a top Tasmanian spot.
Bioluminescence of the blue variety has been seen here quite often and although that was the reason I came the whole area south of the ISTHMUS…. is spectacular and diverse. Crashing waves and fabulous windswept walking on the southern and eastern shores with nothing in the way from Antarctica, and tranquil lagoons and cycling on the west.
Which brings me back to the alien blue lights!
Hideous pink algae washes up on the shore line OF THE ISTHMUS! on my last day and I’m piling up sticks and stones for later. This is the bioluminescent plankton I’ve been searching for and there’s lots of it! The night before I was on the beach with my lovely housemates, Nini and Simon from Hong Kong, in flip-flops!!!!
experimenting and splashing about, but with limited success for me, so tonight I’m going to nail it. It’s 7.30 and I’m off to summon the dazzling blue seasprites into the gaping maw of my trusty Sony A7 Voigtlander combo………Once again, up the isthmus.
SPLASH!!
and after all that lobbing of debris and splashing up and down the shore I decide to hang fire for half an hour and try to capture the gentler image of the shoreline at night. With 180 sec exposures and much cursing at any passing cars, I eventually got the shots I wanted and then a parting snapt of the Milky Way or ‘The Emu’ in down-under-speak.
Result….. and off to my bed, freezing feet and a massive smile.
